Things to do with a baby in Brussels: Sing a song!

Image
Zoe gets into the groove

Ah nursery rhymes, while so many things change, they always stay the same! Row, row, row your boat, The Hokey Pokey, Jumping Bean…these hits never go out of style. If you memory of exactly how these go is getting rusty then I have a prescription for you, Monday Singing at the Holy Trinity Church.

Definitely one of the high points of our week, the singing group is for little ones, six months to three years. There is of course singing with all the dance, jumping and movement that make this a hit for even little babies. Also time for unstructured play with loads of toys for all ages that live at the Church creche. A 2 EUR donation gets you snacks, tea and helps the group keep going.

Try this group once and you will be hooked. A nice community, fantastic group leader and thoroughly enjoyable afternoon past time.

Where: Holy Trinity Church, Rue Capitaine Crespel 29, 1050 Brussels (Louise metro)
When: Thursday, 10 – 12 pm
Who: Mommies, Daddies and little ones 6 months – three years

First Frost

Image

Brrrr, the first frost is officially in the air! After a less than thrilling 6:30 am wake up call from Bababoo (on a Sunday?) imagine my excitement to see the roofs, trees and leaves covered with a glittering dew. Before you could say woolen mittens, I had Zoe all bundled up and ready to head out to capture the first delicious taste of winter.

What a lovely way to start the day. Now back inside and warming up with my coffee and gingerbread cake (YUM), I am happy to present an early morning taste so you can stay warm in your bed. 🙂Image

Sweet Mattias: a baptism

Image

I have never been to a baptism. Strange considering we are about to embark on a journey to accomplish just this with our little Zoe. I can now remember back to early September last year while out in the Swedish archipelago, we received a call from the Big Bear Family. They were also expecting a little one, just one week before bababoo. Suprise!! Well now he is just over eight months and time to take a sacred bath with Jesus. That’s it right?

Had a wonderful time playing with the babies, eating cake and of course taking lots of pictures. What a grand and beautiful church. Enjoy!ImageImageImage

Into the Sun

My love affair with fall continues. The smells in the air, the colors, the promise of transition. Ripeness and wholesomeness. I just love it! As luck would have it, we have had some amazing weather, bright and crisp, which makes for excellent walking and snap snapping. This weekend welcomed a cruise through Louise and Sablon, looking for hidden gems of the apartment/neighborhood variety. Only 50 days until we move and I must say the process is intimidating. I am ready to get going but must wait until the market available catches up. Oi!

Please enjoy the days bounty. 🙂

Shadow days

Image

Ahh, shadow days. When the sun draws long and the cloud pass in catch me if you can mode. Today shadows and light spilled across the floor and magically drew the view of bababoo. A friend? An elf? A delicious dark mirror? Nobody knows but here the lucky view on the first of many encounters.

Big camera arrives!

Oh lordy, only a couple of posts in and I am already falling behind! I will now step into my magic time machine and write as though the moment had just blown in the door, blazing and ready to rock. Here goes!

I can’t believe it. After four looooonnnggg weeks of waiting, my BIG camera has arrived. Good bye rebel, hello 7D. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos7d This is full on cameragasm. So I took the baby for a spin, with my baby, and captured some lovely fall snaps. Olé!

One Fall Day

Autumn, my absolute favorite time of year. I won’t deny it, I am into change, and is there any greater feeling of momentum than a chill breeze, high azure skies and fading gold, red delicious and blazing oranges of the great trees lining Brussels’ parks. Some days bright, set for leaf kicking and gaufre munching. Some days (ok, many days) grey and ripe for cafe haunting, hearty soup making and thick sweater wearing.

As with all seasons, the evolution of ripeness leads to reintroduction to old friends. What is fall to me? Butternut and acorn squash, persimmon, spice cake, pears. Apples!! Old friends and delicious.

Last week I had the pleasure of a grey day stroll to an exciting new treasure, a REAL crafts store here in Brussels. On my way to Place Jourdan, I took a different path just to see the sights and imagine my surprise and glee to come across a yarn havin’, scrapbooking, paint, wood and glass wonderland. Here it is! http://becreativebyschleiper.com/ Perfect browse of an afternoon.

Adventure continued to our destination where frites managed to work their way into the picture. Finally home through Parc Cinquantenaire where an irresistible photo opportunity presented.

Finally home and Icelandic Fish Soup for a dinner.

ICELANDIC FISH SOUP

Recipe and photo by Mimi Thorisson @ http://wp.me/1Aip5

Ingredients: (serve 6-8)

3-4 tbsp butter
2 small onion – finely sliced
1/2 leek – finely sliced
3 tomatoes – chopped into very small pieces
2 small stalks celery, finely sliced
1.5 liters chicken or vegetable stock/ 6 cups
200 ml cream/ 4/5 cups (you can add less if you wish, or none)
100 ml/ 1/2 cup sherry or port or Noilly Prat
3 tbsp tomato concentrate
1/2 tsp saffron powder (optional)
3-4 tbsp wine vinegar
160 ml/ 3/4 cup dry white wine
400 g/ 4 cups small shrimps (without shells)
500 g/ 5 cups mixed nordic fish – salmon, haddock, plaice, halibut – cubed
Salt and pepper to taste

Melt butter in a large pot, add all the vegetables (except the tomatoes) and cook for 10 minutes until tender. Add sherry/noilly prat/port and white wine and reduce for 4 minutes. Add the stock, tomato concentrate, saffron and vinegar. Boil for 15-20 minutes. Add the fish, shrimps and chopped tomatoes, bring to a soft boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Add cream and stir. It is important not to make the soup boil again (as the cream might ‘break’/curdle).

Serve with some warm bread and butter on the side.
